Introduction.

Eastbourne History is presented by the Eastbourne Local History Society
President : William Earl of Burlington.

The Eastbourne Local History Society was founded in 1970.
It is a charitable, not-for-profit organization whose objective is the pursuit and encouragement of an active interest in the study of the history of Eastbourne and its immediate environs and the dissemination of the outcome of such studies by the means of talks, publications, conducted walks and visits to places of local interest. The Society has a wealth of local historical images.
c 1800 Gilbert Arms.      1893 Eastbourne's first bandstand.      1903 First municipal bus service.      1904 Technical Institute and free library.
The society has about 270 members whose subscriptions provide the funds necessary to support the activities. Some twelve meetings are held each year at St Saviours and St Peters Church Hall, South Street, Eastbourne. Each Meeting is addressed by a speaker with local historical knowledge.

A journal, the Eastbourne Local Historian, is published quarterly to provide a vehicle in which members' research findings are published.
It also provides a programme of forthcoming meetings and activities, news, notes, and enquiries.

The Society is administrated by voluntary officers and committee members, whose positions are subject to annual election.
Policy decisions are taken on General Committee and executed by three sub-committees: Activities, Research and Publications.
